Your Packaging Is Not Up to Date - And Your Customers Already Know It

Design trends move fast. What looked modern and premium three years ago looks dated today. And in a market where customers make purchasing decisions in seconds · dated packaging signals one thing: this brand is not paying attention.

Most small brands do not realise their packaging has aged. They designed it once · printed it · and moved on. The product inside is the same quality. The market around them has moved.

What Packaging Trends Actually Mean for Your Brand

Following trends blindly is not the answer. Chasing every new aesthetic direction produces packaging that looks like it belongs to no one and everyone at the same time.

But ignoring trends entirely is equally dangerous. When the entire premium segment of your category has moved toward a particular visual language - cleaner typography · more considered use of space · materials that feel as good as they look - and your packaging is still using a 2019 aesthetic · the customer notices. Not consciously. They just reach for the other product.

The skill is knowing which trends are relevant to your brand · your audience · and your category - and integrating them in a way that feels like evolution rather than imitation.

Materials Are Part of the Design

This is the thing most packaging designers who work only on screen miss completely. The material your packaging is printed on is not a production decision made after the design is finished. It is a design decision made at the beginning.

A matte laminate finish communicates something different than gloss. Kraft paper tells a different story than white board. Soft touch coating creates a physical experience before the product is even opened.

At Alkeme Design packaging projects always include material consideration from the first concept stage - because the way a package feels in someone's hand is part of the brand experience.

When to Redesign Your Packaging

If your packaging was designed more than 3 years ago · if your category has moved visually and you have not · if your sales have plateaued despite strong product quality · or if you are entering a new market with higher visual standards - it is time.

Not because the old packaging was wrong. Because the market has moved and your brand needs to move with it.
