Why Your Family and Friends Are Ruining Your Brand

Most founders make the same mistake before they ever hire a designer. They ask everyone around them for an opinion.

Their partner. Their colleague. Their mother. Their friend who "has a good eye for design." And by the time they arrive at a branding studio they have collected 12 conflicting opinions · 4 Pinterest boards that contradict each other · and a brief that asks for a minimalist luxury brand with bold colorful typography and a vintage modern feel.

This is not a brief. It is a committee.

And committees do not build brands. They build compromises.

The Problem With Asking Everyone

Your family loves you. Your friends want to help. But neither of them is your customer. When your mother says she prefers blue · she is telling you her favorite color. When your friend says the logo looks too simple · they are telling you they associate complexity with value. When your colleague says it needs to be more professional · they are telling you what professional means to them — not to your target audience.

A brand is not designed for the people who know you. It is designed for the people who do not know you yet - and need to be convinced in 5 seconds that you are worth their attention.

The only opinion that matters in a branding project is the opinion of your ideal customer. And they were never in the room.

The Other Mistake - Verifying Your Designer With ChatGPT

This is a new one. Increasingly clients take the work their designer presents and run it through an AI tool to get feedback. Then they come back with AI-generated critique as if it were professional design direction.

AI tools can describe what they see. They cannot tell you whether a brand identity will work in the real world · whether it will age well · whether it communicates the right positioning to the right audience · or whether it will stand out on a shelf next to 40 competitors.

A designer with 12 years of experience is not competing with ChatGPT. They are doing something fundamentally different. Strategy · context · market knowledge · and the ability to make decisions that cannot be crowdsourced.

What Actually Makes a Brand Work

A brand works when it is built around one clear decision: who is this for and what do we need them to feel.

Not what the founder likes. Not what the family approves. Not what an AI generates in 3 seconds.

The brands that last are the ones where a single strategic creative mind made deliberate decisions - color · typography · form · feeling - based on the audience · the market · and the long term positioning of the business.

That is what brand identity design actually is. Not decoration. Strategy made visible.
